Is everyone ready for today's Pinterest challenge? I know I'm excited to share my project and can't wait to see what everybody else came up with. Pinterest in general just makes me tinkle in my pants with joy! So let's get to it!
Lately I have been obssessed with games like Words With Friends, Wordosaur, Scrabble and any other word games that make me use my noggin. If you ever want to play with me you can come over. I promise I'm not weird. Well, only a little. Anyways, the obvious choice was to make something involving Scrabble letters. Meet my inspiration pin:
Online these babies go for $26, but with a little crafting and an old scrabble game, these can be yours for practically free!
Here are the materials you need:
- 64 scrabble letters (check yard sales, thrift stores, or order some on Ebay or Amazon if you don't have any on hand)
- 1 thin cork board (buy at any craft store)
- 1 x-acto knife
- super glue
- hot glue gun
- modpodge/sealer
Step 1.
Arrange 16 letters to make 4 words that you are happy with on your coasters (Ex. Beer, Wine, Hope, Love, etc.)
Step 2.
Glue letters together using a thin layer of super glue leaving about 15 seconds to dry between each letter.
Step 3.
Using an x-acto knife, follow along blocks closely while cutting into cork leaving a clean line. Use a glue gun to attach the cork to letters. I let it dry for a good hour or so.
Step 4.
Spray a very thin layer of clear coat or modgepodge over coaster to protect wood from moisture. I used Rustoleum's clear enamel that seemed to do the trick. Let dry for a full day.
Step 5.
Pour yourself a nice cold beverage and enjoy your work!
These would also make great gifts for the holidays for any of you creative peeps on a budget!

However, my first thought was disappointment that you didn't come up with your own word combinations. I was looking forward to see others' interpretations of the same project. Also, I'm not sure if the Etsy seller would be happy to see others making exact copies of the inspiration piece.

Kat- I'm so glad you like them! Hopefully the Etsy seller will be flattered that I love their work enough to copy it. And since I'm not using it to make a profit and simply using it for my own personal use I think it's all good.

I love them, I think it is a great idea, and who has the time to really make the letters into words up and down...geez people! Give her some credit for doing actually doing something! :)

Hey! We find games at yard sales for $1! My husband picked up a spare scrabble set for 50 cents last year at one such sale;)
ReplyDeleteA modification -- I'd suggest hot-gluing a felt square underneath. This would make the coasters sturdier and would keep them from scratching delicate surfaces. Great idea! Cheers!

ReplyDeleteLove this, but can't figure out what keeps the sweat from the glass that's on the coaster from rolling off the coaster and onto the table? Does anything absorb the moisture?
ReplyDeleteI haven't really had a problem with that happening but maybe we drink faster than most folks? They are more of a novelty item and maybe not the best choice if you are looking for super absorbent coasters.

ReplyDeleteThese are so cute, I love the idea, and I had every intent on making them. I can't tell you how hard it is to find scrabble letters without the board and everything. I didn't really feel like spending the money on the game brand new though. I keep my eyes peeled at thrift stores all the time though.

I love these too! I sell them on my Etsy site in cute "Themes" with just one word hidden in each coaster (Inspiration Theme, Book Club Theme, etc.). Makes it fun to find the words. Also make large trivets with 100 tiles and with the words in burgundy letters so they stand out.
