Is everyone ready for today's Pinterest challenge? I know I'm excited to share my project and can't wait to see what everybody else came up with. Pinterest in general just makes me tinkle in my pants with joy! So let's get to it!
Lately I have been obssessed with games like Words With Friends, Wordosaur, Scrabble and any other word games that make me use my noggin. If you ever want to play with me you can come over. I promise I'm not weird. Well, only a little. Anyways, the obvious choice was to make something involving Scrabble letters. Meet my inspiration pin:
Online these babies go for $26, but with a little crafting and an old scrabble game, these can be yours for practically free!
Here are the materials you need:
- 64 scrabble letters (check yard sales, thrift stores, or order some on Ebay or Amazon if you don't have any on hand)
- 1 thin cork board (buy at any craft store)
- 1 x-acto knife
- super glue
- hot glue gun
- modpodge/sealer
Step 1.
Arrange 16 letters to make 4 words that you are happy with on your coasters (Ex. Beer, Wine, Hope, Love, etc.)
Step 2.
Glue letters together using a thin layer of super glue leaving about 15 seconds to dry between each letter.
Step 3.
Using an x-acto knife, follow along blocks closely while cutting into cork leaving a clean line. Use a glue gun to attach the cork to letters. I let it dry for a good hour or so.
Step 4.
Spray a very thin layer of clear coat or modgepodge over coaster to protect wood from moisture. I used Rustoleum's clear enamel that seemed to do the trick. Let dry for a full day.
Step 5.
Pour yourself a nice cold beverage and enjoy your work!
These would also make great gifts for the holidays for any of you creative peeps on a budget!

krysta, these coasters seriously rock my socks off. i MUST make some! and what a great gift idea. great work! did you have trouble finding scrabble tiles?
ReplyDelete-corrie @ house made
These look awesome! I think I may make some for my bedroom! Good idea checking amazon and ebay! I hadn't thought of that!
ReplyDeletecute! I saw this recently on Pinterest and thought it was such a cute idea! Even better if you could make words both directions but that'd be really difficult.
ReplyDeleteClicked over from YHL. Very nice! Wonder if you could make them read both across AND up and down. That would be a real challenge!
ReplyDeleteHa I hadn't read Robin's comment.
ReplyDeleteReally cute idea. You can buy bags of scrabble letters at craft stores in case you don't want to raid your own scrabble game.
ReplyDeleteThanks ladies! I almost attempted to do the words both ways but my head started hurting at the thought of figuring that out for four coasters!
ReplyDeleteLove them. What a great gift idea. I will be making a few of these for hostess gifts for the upcoming holiday season.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a cute idea, awesome for presents. Just the kind of thing my uncle would like! Great job!
ReplyDeleteHere from YHL, good job! I have these on my pinboard too but haven't gotten around to gathering up the letters. However, my first thought was disappointment that you didn't come up with your own word combinations. I was looking forward to see others' interpretations of the same project. Also, I'm not sure if the Etsy seller would be happy to see others making exact copies of the inspiration piece.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cute idea! I have been wanting to make some DIY caosters for awhile. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOh and don't worry about copying people's ideas..that's what Pintrest is for. :)
Kat- I'm so glad you like them! Hopefully the Etsy seller will be flattered that I love their work enough to copy it. And since I'm not using it to make a profit and simply using it for my own personal use I think it's all good.
ReplyDeleteI have these on my DIY Pinterest board too! I can't wait to try them. Yours turned out great!!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I am definitely going to be making these in the near future :)
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I think I might do something similar for christmas gifts!
ReplyDeleteWow some good comments and some not so good comments huh? You aren't selling yours, and if someone wants to buy them you have given them the link to do so! I love them, I think it is a great idea, and who has the time to really make the letters into words up and down...geez people! Give her some credit for doing actually doing something! :)
ReplyDeleteorder a whole replacement set of scrabble tiles online from hasbro for a little over $6.
ReplyDeleteWhoa. Somehow these never popped up during one of my regular Pinterest Stalk-Fests. They are awesome! Heck, I'll just pin yours! :)

ReplyDelete@Bel
ReplyDeleteI wanna see when your done!
Hello! This is such a cute idea that it made me think of another one you can make. How about a magnet with scrabble letters? It would be fun to spell out a message.
ReplyDeleteI guess I am always thinking about magnets since that is what I do for a living.
Have a wonderful holiday everyone!

Just stumbled across this site and I just had to comment, Krysta... My name is Krista, too. And I'm in SW Florida, too. Omg lol, small world.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteKrista, This world IS very small! Thanks for visiting!
here is one location you can go to browse through puzzles that have 4x4 words that read across and down. Cool addition to this gift is to provide the CLUES to go with! ;)

@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteLove that idea!
Hey! We find games at yard sales for $1! My husband picked up a spare scrabble set for 50 cents last year at one such sale;)
ReplyDeleteA modification -- I'd suggest hot-gluing a felt square underneath. This would make the coasters sturdier and would keep them from scratching delicate surfaces. Great idea! Cheers!
ReplyDelete@Corrie You can also check out Craigslist for used Scrabble games-- I found one just a few blocks from me for $2 and made a set of these for my friend for Christmas
ReplyDeletehttp://www.easysurf.cc/squares.htm
ReplyDeleteIt has the squares created where they are acrotic.
Goodwill usually has scrabble games!!
ReplyDeleteLove this, but can't figure out what keeps the sweat from the glass that's on the coaster from rolling off the coaster and onto the table? Does anything absorb the moisture?
ReplyDeleteI haven't really had a problem with that happening but maybe we drink faster than most folks? They are more of a novelty item and maybe not the best choice if you are looking for super absorbent coasters.
DeleteWow! Great Tutorial! You are super clever! Thanks for all your hard work sharing how to do this! Who would have thought!?
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! Thank you for writing this I can't wait to see more.
ReplyDeletei am absolutely going to make these. for everyone i know lol.
ReplyDeleteThese are so cute, I love the idea, and I had every intent on making them. I can't tell you how hard it is to find scrabble letters without the board and everything. I didn't really feel like spending the money on the game brand new though. I keep my eyes peeled at thrift stores all the time though.
ReplyDeleteJust fantastic!! X
ReplyDeleteHi Krysta
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome idea! My mother-in-law absolutely loves scrabble so I am definitely going to make these for her. Thanks for the idea!
~Makala~
I love these too! I sell them on my Etsy site in cute "Themes" with just one word hidden in each coaster (Inspiration Theme, Book Club Theme, etc.). Makes it fun to find the words. Also make large trivets with 100 tiles and with the words in burgundy letters so they stand out. I also make Scrabble wine charms, pendants, magnets, etc. Most are easy to make, but if you're interested in buying, my shop is here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/peachypendants?section_id=5493385
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I love this idea!
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable idea! I love Scrabble!
ReplyDeleteCute, cute, cute! Yours turned out really well. I think the cork does a good job of keeping the coaster from scratching surfaces.
ReplyDeleteJust stumbled across this page and find it super amazing idea... Quite creative... Will surely try...
